STORM LAKE, IA (Northwestiowanow) – The City of Storm Lake is activating a voluntary water conservation plan.
As of mid-May, Buena Vista County and surrounding areas are listed as abnormally dry by the U.S. Drought Monitor. The city says during peak summer heat, water demand can reach up to 5 million gallons per day, putting significant strain on treatment capacity.
The voluntary conservation plan applies to residents in Storm Lake, Lakeside, Truesdale, and other users of the municipal water system.
Earlier this month, the Storm Lake City Council unanimously approved increases to water rates to help fund future system improvements.
Finance Director Tyler Gibbons says the changes are designed to help cover future system improvements while managing demand.
To save water, residents are encouraged to water lawns only when necessary, typically no more than once or twice per week, and to do so during early morning or evening hours to reduce evaporation.
Officials also advise limiting water use by running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines, shortening showers, fixing leaks, and using shut-off nozzles when washing vehicles.
