Hull, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The South O’Brien Volleyball team traveled to Hull Monday Night for the Class 1A Region 2 Semifinals to take on the #1 seed Boyden-Hull. The two teams met earlier on the year when the Comets swept the Wolverines 3 sets to 0.
It was good back-and-forth action for set 1, started off with Emmaly Schueller recording back-to-back aces. Boyden-Hull was able to build a lead up to five before the Wolverines battled back to within 1. A big run with the Comet’s Jaelyn De Jongh on the serve got Boyden-Hull back up by 5 and they didn’t look back. South O’Brien was able to send some of their best hits of the night, but Boyden-Hull was too good defensively when it came to digs, and the Comets came away with a 25-16 win in set 1. Boyden-Hull’s Elsie Hoegh, who came in ranked 9th overall in the State of Iowa for Kills per set, recorded 4 first set Kills and an Ace while teammate De Jongh had 3 kills and a pair of aces.
It was back-and-forth early again in Set 2, but Boyden-Hull opened up a 5-point lead with Anna Van Middendorp on the serve. The Wolverines missed too many hits in the set, and a dominant run toward the end, where Kaylee Kamies notched 3 aces, helped lift the Comets to a 25-12 win in set 2. Elsie Hoegh recorded 7 more kills in the 2nd set to continue a dominant night for the Boyden-Hull Senior Outside Hitter.
It was Ada Hoegh who got off to a rapid start in set 3 for the Comets, recording 3 early kills. Her older sister Elsie also piled up 5 more kills on the evening. De Jongh continued to have a great night serving, recording her 4th ace of the evening along with another couple of kills to bring her nightly total to 7. Ada Hoegh picked up her 4th kill in the set, which was the 25th point for Boyden-Hull, as they won set 3 25-10, and cruised to 3 sets to nothing sweep of South O’Brien.
The Wolverines season comes to an end at 15-8 and they took 4th in the War Eagle Conference this year with an 8-3 league mark. It was not only the most wins for South O’Brien since 2019, but their deepest postseason run in that time frame. A strong Senior class of Bre Lee Rasmussen, Raegan Plagge, Abby Woodalland Lauren Irwin move on for the Wolverines.
Boyden-Hull improves to 23-11 overall and will advance to the Class 1A Region 2 Championship match to take on the #6 seed St. Edmond of Fort Dodge, who upset the #2 seed Saint Ansgar 3 sets to 1. That matchup will be played in Spencer on October 28th with the winner advancing to the State Tournament in Coralville. The Comets will be trying to make it back to the State Tournament after a brief one-year hiatus last season.
