Spencer, IA (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer football team was on the road Friday night for Class 4A District 1 action against Sergeant Bluff-Luton. The winner would claim the District title and lock up homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs next week.
Spencer needed to play their best game of the year to have a shot at the unbeaten Warriors and got off to a very rough start. Spencer’s first three drives ended in a punt, interception, and fumble respectively, giving short fields for Sergeant Bluff-Luton all three times. All three times, the Warriors capitalized with Touchdowns. Justin Ehlers hit Jacobi Cofield on a 16-yard Touchdown pass, Carson Yager had a 1-yard Touchdown run, and Cofield got himself an 8-yard Touchdown run. Sergeant Bluff-Luton led 21-0 after the first quarter.
Neither team scored in the 2nd despite another two turnovers by Spencer. The Warriors took a 21-0 lead into the locker room.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton came out with a very strong couple of drives in the 3rd quarter. Justin Ehlers scored a 39-yard Touchdown run to finish off an 8-play drive that went just over 4 minutes. Spencer would fumble the football on a high snap the 2nd play of the following drive, and it only took the Warriors 2 plays to find the endzone on Jager’s 2nd Touchdown of the game.
That score made it 35-0 and the clock ran for the remainder of the game, as the Warriors cruised to the win and locked up the Class 4A District 1 Championship. Sergeant Bluff-Luton completes an undefeated season at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the District. They will have home field in the first round of the Class 4A Playoffs next week against a to-be-determined opponent.
