Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls Soccer team welcomed Bishop Heelan of Sioux City to town for a ranked, inter-class matchup featuring the #2 in 1A Crusaders and the #8 in 2A Tigers.
The first 20 minutes of the 1st half was very competitive, with a lot of action in the middle 3rd of the pitch. Traelyn White of Bishop Heelan broke the ice though on a run-out, beating Spencer defenders down the field to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. White would pick up a second goal a few minutes later after weaving through traffic in the Penalty area.
Spencer had their first half opportunities, especially with a strong north wind at their back but couldn’t capitalize. Heelan would find the back of the goal one more time in the first half on a Daniela De los Santos goal and the Crusaders took a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers came out of the locker room strong and with some urgency, keeping the pressure up on the Heelan back line, but still couldn’t break though for a goal.
Traelyn White made it a hat trick on the day for Bishop Heelan, extending the lead to 4. A couple of minutes later, it was Anna Bella Reyes who scored for Heelan, giving them a 5-0 lead that they held on to through the final horn.
With regular goalkeeper Abby Lee out for Bishop Heelan, Maddie LaFleur stepped in and had a terrific effort, keeping the clean sheet for the Crusaders as they improve to 5-0 on the season.
Up next is going to be a Missouri River Conference battle for Bishop Heelan across town at West High of Sioux City.
