Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Softball team hosted their home invitational on Friday and Saturday with several very competitive teams coming to town.
On Friday’s games, Spencer fell to Le Mars 13-1 and Sioux Center 9-3.
Newell-Fonda took a 4-1 loss to North of Sioux City and Le Mars outscored Sioux Center 11-8.
Saturday’s action started with Spencer winning via a walk-off against North of Sioux City in the 7th inning off the bat of Jill Kabrick. Kabrick had been elevated to Varsity this past week, and she was dealing with the adjustment early on before two clutch hits down the stretch, each go-ahead RBI at the time.
Emma White pitched the majority of the game for the Tigers. Despite giving up most of the runs in the first two innings, White was able to lock in in the middle innings, giving the Spencer offense the chance to come back and eventually take the lead in what would be a game involving 4 lead changes. White said she got a big lift from teammates.
Elswhere, Newell-Fonda routed Le Mars 9-1. Storm Lake also beat Le Mars 10-3.
Spencer and Newell-Fonda collided to wrap up the Tournament on Saturday. This was a thriller of a pitching dual between Newell-Fonda’s Anna Mercer and Spencer’s Jersey Vail.
The game went to extra innings tied at 2. After Spencer pushed across a run in the top of the 8th, Newell-Fonda was able to get players on base and Mercer, who pitched all 8 for the Mustangs, also got the walk off hit to win the game 4-3.
