Paullina, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – South O’Brien hosted Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Monday night in Paullina at Swanson Sports complex for a couple of games. The first game had been suspended way back in late May, and the two teams picked up where they had left off in the 2nd inning with South O’Brien leading 6-0.

The Hawks would roll though in that first game despite the 6-0 deficit, outscoring South O’Brien 14-1 over the final 6 innings to win 14-7.

Game two featured Kamryn Ebel in the circle for HMS and Tawni Wulf pitching for South O’Brien.

After holding the Hawks in check for the top of the 1st, the Wolverines struck for 3 in the bottom. Ashlyn Gunnerson started things off with an RBI double, knocking in Abby Nelson.

Tawni Wulf began a big day at the plate, driving in Alli Griebel to make it 3-0.

Wulf added to that lead in the 3rd inning with a 2 RBI single, driving in Rassmussen and Griebel.

Wulf would give up 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, but only 1 earned, and locked in from there, throwing 3 consecutive shutout innings, including striking out the side in the 4th.

Ebel settled in a little more in the 4th and 5th innings for HMS. The defense helped out a lot, including a tough play made by Gracie Knobloch at short for the first out in the bottom of the 5th.

HMS was able to get a run accross in the 6th on an Ava Shriver RBI double, scoring Cammy Wilson. South O’Brien responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning though, scoring 4 more runs, and Alli Griebel drove in two of them with a single.

The Wovlerines would hold the Hawks in check for the top of the 7th and pick up an 11-4 win.

Tawni Wulf along with a 3 RBI day at the plate, threw 7 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 earned runs, walked 5 and struck out 7.

South O’Brien is now 10-13 on the year and 4-7 in War Eagle play. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn falls to 5-14 and 2-7 in the Conference.
