IOWA (NorthwestIowaNow) — Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 18 have reopened after a weekend shutdown caused by dangerous winter weather.
The Iowa Department of Transportation closed I-35 in both directions on Sunday, December 28, from Exit 111 near Ames to Exit 194 near Clear Lake. U.S. 18 was also closed between mile marker 190 and U.S. 65. Officials reported that freezing rain, snow squalls, and strong winds created blizzard-like conditions, making travel nearly impossible.
Crews worked through Monday morning to clear snow and ice and remove stranded vehicles.
The DOT reopened I-35 early Monday afternoon, but drivers are still advised to use caution. Pavement may remain slick, and visibility can change quickly.
Officials continue to discourage non-essential travel and recommend checking Iowa 511 for real-time updates.
