(KICD) — Yesterday was the deadline for candidates in this year’s municipal and school board elections to file papers. Spirit Lake and Esthervile will have contests for Mayor and city council. There will be NO contested races in Spencer or Sheldon.

Spirit Lake Mayor Bruce Keenan did NOT file for re-election. Long-time councilman Kevin Bice and Nate Voertherms have filed for that position. There are three spots open on the Spirit Lake city council and five candidates: Incumbents Jerry Harbst and Keith Brockmeyer; and Kent Baschke, Brett Johnson, and Dave Mensing.

Estherville Mayor Kenny Billings – who had retired from that position once, but consented to serve again when Mayor Joseph May moved out of town – is NOT seeking re-election. The two individuals who DO want to be mayor are Adam Edwards and Paul Radmaker. Three candidates are seeking the At-Large position that Joan Heckard is giving up: Will Breck, Zachary Ehret, and Gary Myers. Diana Gesiriech and David Hovinga are running to fill an unexpired term, and Roger Guge is running for the 5th ward council seat to which he has recently appointed.

In Spencer three incumbents are running unopposed: Mayor Steve Bomgaars, At-Large Councilman Loren Reit, and 4th Ward Councilman Donovan Wunschel. David Lyons was the only candidate to file for the vacated 2nd ward position.

There are three seats on the Sheldon ballot in November and three candidates. Pete Hamill is running for re-election in Ward 1, and Brad Hindt is seeking re-election in Ward 2. Former Chamber of commerce director Shantel Oostra has filed for the at-large council seat that Wayne Barahona is vacating.
