Sioux Fall, SD (KICD) — As of Friday morning, South Dakota became the ninth state where bird flu has been confirmed in dairy animals. Southeast South Dakota, Northwest Iowa, and Southwest Minnesota is a concentrated dairy production area, but State Veterinarian Beth Thompson will not pinpoint the geographic region where the confirmation was made.
Affected animals seem to be recovering from the virus within a few weeks’ time.

Officials say milk from cows that are infected is being dumped, but also say pastuerized milk is safe to drink.
Seventeen states have put restrictions on the movement of dairy animals. Iowa is not one of them.
At news-time the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Iowa Dairy Association declined to comment to KICD.
