Spencer, IA (KICD)– The first of three Eggs and Issues legislative forums was held Saturday at Spencer City Hall where the main topic on the mind of many revolved around the “Students First” or voucher bill that was signed into law last week that gives funding to families wishing to send their children to private schools.
Senator Lynn Evans, who is in his first few weeks in office and a former school official, was the only local lawmaker to vote against the bill which he says was not because he did not believe in the legislation but instead because he felt there was something left out.
Representative Megan Jones of Sioux Rapids noted the new law makes the learning system more adaptive to see that students are getting the education they deserve while also taking strengths and weaknesses into account.
Senator Dave Rowley of Spirit Lake may be able to help address issues of bullying and assaults at schools around the state.
Representative John Wills of Spirit Lake added to the conversation by saying a positive to the law that many are not aware of is that it will help public districts also better utilize categorical funding.
KICD News will be bringing you more of the topics discussed at Saturday Eggs and Issues forum in the coming days. The entire session can also be listened to anytime by going to the “Podcast” page on kicdam.com.
