Des Moines, IA — Wednesday afternoon at roughly 2 p.m., the National Weather Service in Des Moines finalized most of its damage surveys from Sunday night’s severe weather event.
A total of six tornadoes were confirmed across Palo Alto, Pocahontas, and Kossuth counties. The strongest occurred in rural Mallard, where an EF1 tornado produced peak winds of 95 mph. It touched down at 9:09 p.m. and lifted at 9:12 p.m., traveling 2.7 miles. No additional comments were included in the report.
Another EF1 tornado was confirmed near rural Plover in Pocahontas County, also with peak winds of 95 mph. It touched down at 9:05 p.m. and lifted one minute later at 9:06 p.m., with a path length of one mile. Survey comments noted damage in Plover, with a tornado reported in the area.
Farther north along Highway 4 in Emmetsburg, the National Weather Service reported an EF0 tornado on the south edge of town. It occurred between 9:12 and 9:14 p.m., with a path length of 0.79 miles. No additional comments were included.
Another EF0 tornado occurred on the eastern edge of Graettinger. Drone footage and photos revealed a narrow damage path stretching just over one mile, with the tornado remaining on the ground for approximately one minute.
A third EF0 tornado was confirmed between Whittemore and Highway 18 in Kossuth County. It also remained on the ground for about one minute, though no further details were provided.
The second tornado in Kossuth County occurred in rural Lone Rock. This EF1 tornado lasted about one minute and had a path length of 0.74 miles. No additional comments were noted.
In total, within our coverage area, there were 10 EFUs (straight-line wind events), three EF0 tornadoes, and three EF1 tornadoes reported Sunday night.
