Spencer, Ia (KICD) – The Spencer Girls Tennis team placed 3rd at the Iowa High School Girls State Tennis Tournament last week. I was able to catch up with Coach Bob Schlaeger and Senior Ali Graettinger to recap the team championships as well as reflect on a record-breaking season for the Tigers.
Graettinger talked about the team’s mentality going through the postseason.
Tennis more than a lot of other sports sees the same teams succeeding at the highest level year in and year out. Spencer was able to break in to that club and disrupt it this season. Coach Schlaeger believes this is the start of something bigger.
Graettinger also believes this team has the potential to continue deep runs in the postseason.
One of the biggest wins in the tournament run was beating Columbus Catholic of Waterloo. Schlaeger described the significance of the win.
Tennis coaches have a more difficult job then most when building a program. Schlaeger talked about his approach.
Graettinger looked back on her and her classmates’ path in the Sport.
Graettinger enjoyed taking a leadership role this season.
Schlaeger had a lot of praise for this year’s senior class.
The experience this year’s Spencer Girls Tennis team received was not only great for the Seniors to go out on, but the underclassmen to grow on.
