Okoboji, IA (KICD) — The Okoboji City Council has written and signed a letter to Governor Reynolds about the flooding at the Iowa Great Lakes. Councilmember Julie Andres says she spoke to the head of the DNR who seemed unaware of the magnitude of the problem.

Councilman Dan Sanders is Okoboji’s representative on the Emergency Management Commission. He says a conversation within that group about releasing additional water into the Little Sioux River eclipsed the request for state aid.

Other members of the Okoboji council said they’re disappointed an ad hoc committee appointed by the Dickinson County board of Supervisors – which met in private – seems concerned about long-term solutions, but not abating the current high water.
But Sanders and Andres both stress the community cannot keep kicking flood-mitigation down the road.

The letter to the Governor from the city of Okoboji asks the Corps of Engineers ” to begin reducing the lake’s water level in a manner that ensures faster drainage without causing detrimental impacts downstream.” And ends “Swift action on these requests is imperative to protect public and private property, residents’ livelihoods, as well and our community’s well-being.”
