Mankato, MN (KICD)– The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed several roads in the southwest portion of the state due to hazardous travel created by ongoing blizzard conditions.
Among the highways closed are Interstate 90 from Worthington to the South Dakota border, Highway 59 from the Iowa border to Fulda and Highway 60 from the Iowa border to Worthington.
At this time, routes east of Worthington are expected to remain open but MNDOT officials note additional road closures or travel advisories are possible as conditions are expected to worsen overnight.
The current closures will remain in effect until conditions improve and motorists are reminded it is illegal to travel on a closed road and anyone requiring rescue efforts in those areas are considered liable for all related costs.
In Northwest Iowa, most roads are considered to be at least partially covered with snow according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Highway 18 between Spencer and Everly, Highway 86 from Milford to the Minnesota border, Highway 9 from Spirit Lake to Harris and Superior to Estherville are considered to be impassible. Tow bans also in place in Dickinson, O’Brien and Osceola Counties
