Spencer, Ia (KICD) – The Iowa High School Football season officially fired up in the KICD area Friday night.

Matt Groenewold had the call on Big Country 107.7 of Emmetsburg as they hosted Class 2A #9 Central Lyon/George-Little Rock.

Emmetsburg scored first with 1:53 to go in the first quarter on a 2-yard Brayden Yates Touchdown Run. The PAT was good, giving the E-Hawks a 7-0 lead.

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock would find the endzone with 4:55 left in the 2nd quarter. Jayden Daale found Drew Kupferschmid from 8-yards away. The Lions would miss the extra point and trailed 7-6.

CL/GLR got a late 1st have Touchdown on a big pass from Daale to Matt Elbert. A successful extra point gave the Lions a 13-7 lead.

The second quarter scoring wasn’t quite don yet though, as Gavin Swanson was able to find Carson Baak on a 46-yard completion, scoring a Touchdown to tie it. The extra point gave Emmetsburg the lead going into the locker room.

Central Lyon/George-Little Rock would regain the lead when Michelet Sedam ran it in from 8-yards out. What would prove to be a very important extra point was missed though, and the score was 19-14 with 6:27 left in the 3rd quarter.

Early in the 4th Quarter, Brayden Yates collected the final yard to score, giving Emmetsburg a 20-19 lead. The E-Hawks would attempt a 2-Point conversion to try and take a field goal lead, but it was unsuccessful.

The Emmetsburg defense held fast the rest of the game though, and the E-Hawks came away with the 20-19 win.

4 different E-Hawks combined for 120 yards on 36 carries while Gavin Swanson completed 6 of 8 for 90 yards and a Touchdown through the air. Emmetsburg was outgained in the contest 307-210 despite the win.

The Spencer Tigers hosted Class 3A #7 Humboldt at Dale Norton Field. That game was on News Radio 102.5 and AM 1240 KICD.

Humboldt started the scoring with a Coen Matson 74-yard Touchdown Pass to Keegan Groat.

After a missed PAT, Spencer was able to put together a scoring drive.

The 27-yard Touchdown Pass and successful PAT gave Spencer a 7-6 lead.

It was a lead that didn’t last for very long though, as on the ensuing kick, Humboldt’s Chase Flaherty took it all the way back for the Touchdown. The Wildcats hit the PAT this time, giving them a 13-7 lead.

Spencer responded with a long drive inside the Humboldt 10-yard line with short time left. Brady Vreeman would kick the 30-yard field goal through, making the score 13-10 at halftime.

The Tigers forced a Humboldt 3 and out to begin things in the 2nd half, and went on a long 7-minute march, but it ended in a missed field goal.

Humboldt came back with a marathon drive of their own, going 13 plays and 80 yards in just under 8 minutes, capped off by a Coen Matson 7-yard Touchdown run and PAT, making it 20-10.

Spencer turned the ball over on downs the next drive on their own 24, giving the Wildcats a short field. Humboldt capitalized, and Trey Al Hameed scored. After a successful PAT, Humboldt led 27-10.

That is how the game would wrap up, as the Tigers were unable to make any magic in the last minute-thirty-four.

In the 27-10 Humboldt Win, Quarterback Coen Matson completed 10 of his 13 passes for 194 yards and a Touchdown while rushing for 39 yards.

Keegan Grote was the top target, catching 3 passes for 107 yards and a Touchdown.

Spencer’s Cael Bruning played well, completing 10 passes on 18 attempts for 143 yards and a Touchdown. Bruning led the Tigers in Rushing with 43 yards.

Alta-Aurelia lost a low scorer against Kingsley-Pierson/River Valley 13-8.

Cherokee routed MMCRU 37-8.

Sheldon beat rivals Sibley-Ocheyedan 20-6.

Sioux Central rolled through South O’Brien 32-8.

Okoboji routed North Union 41-7.

Pocahontas Area lost to South Central Calhoun 35-12.

1A #1 OABCIG was too much for Estherville Lincoln Central in a 41-14 game.

Finally, the biggest game in the area delivered, with 3A #3 Algona edging past 2A #1 Spirit Lake 42-40.
