Des Moines, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Big money is moving through Pocahontas County, but state watchdogs say the local books need a tighter leash.
State Auditor Rob Sand just released the county’s latest checkup. It shows local revenues skyrocketed to over $24 million last year—a massive 25% jump. Most of that extra cash came from state road projects, a new tax levy, and higher drainage assessments.
Meanwhile, county spending rose about 8%, topping out at $17.5 million.
But it’s not all smooth sailing. Sand flagged seven problem areas, including a repeat warning that Pocahontas county isn’t properly separating financial duties among staff.
Auditors also caught a bunch of missing paperwork where major assets and bills weren’t recorded correctly.
Local officials say they are already tweaking their habits to fix the errors.
