Storm Lake, IA (northwestiowanow) — A two-vehicle crash south of Storm Lake claimed the life of a Buena Vista University student Monday afternoon.

The crash was reported October 26 at the intersection of Highway 110 and 85th Avenue near the Storm Lake Municipal Airport.

Emergency responders from the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Storm Lake Fire Department, Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, and other agencies were called to the scene.

Two medical helicopters were dispatched, with one landing at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and the other at the airport. Highway 110 was temporarily closed in both directions while emergency crews responded.

Buena Vista University President Brian Lenzmeier announced Monday evening that Kaylee Nachtigal, a 2024 Spencer High School graduate and member of the university’s women’s wrestling team, died as a result of the crash.

Lenzmeier said two other BVU students were also involved in the accident. Both sustained injuries and were receiving medical treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no additional information had been released at this time.
