Newell, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – With the 2024-2025 Iowa High School Sports season winding down, we continue our series of the best teams from the past sports year in the KICD 9-County Area.

We now go to the spring sports where we start with Girls Golf and the Newell-Fonda Mustangs.

In the grand scheme of Newell-Fonda athletics, Girls Golf can be overlooked amongst the success of other sports. The past few years though, the Mustangs have been one of the best teams in the KICD 9-County area.

Numbers tend to have an effect on Newell-Fonda’s head-to-head throughout the season. It was a bumpy start which included a no-team-score against Ridge View, a 215-205 loss to preseason Twin Lakes Conference favorite Emmetsburg, and a forfeit loss to GTRA.

After a 2nd place finish at the Poky Invite to Emmetsburg, the Mustangs got on a roll, going unbeaten the rest of the way, including a Twin Lakes Conference Tournament Championship where they won a very close race in the top 4 that was only separated by 5 team strokes.

Next up was sub-regionals where Newell-Fonda edged out Alta-Aurelia by a couple of strokes to win that Tournament.

The Mustangs would try to punch their ticket as a team to the Iowa High School State Golf Tournament when they went to Primghar for the Class 1A Region 1 Tournament.

Akron-Westfield won the Tournament with a 384, and Newell-Fonda was the only other sub-400 team score, shooting a 398, advancing them to the State Tournament.

The Class 1A Iowa High School State Girls Golf Tournament would be played at the American Legion Post #46 Golf Course in Marshalltown. There were 10 scoring teams at the State Tournament, and after two days of golf, Newell-Fonda finished 7th with a score of 392, just behind their regional counterparts in Akron-Westfield who shot 374 for 6th. Easton Valley would win the State Championship for Class 1A with a 344, Nashua-Plainfield was 2nd at 361 and Newman Catholic of Mason City placed 3rd with 364.

Senior Macy DeMey had a 9-hole low on the season of 41, averaging 52.9. Her cumulative average of 52.79 was top of the 6-girl roster for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Rowyn Nielsen showed some nice potential for the future, with the team’s best 18-hole low at 94 with a cumulative average of 55.17.

With a limited roster in the 2025 season, Newell-Fonda will be hoping for some serious infusion of youth from their freshman class in 2026 after graduating seniors Macy DeMay, Jaicee Vanderhoff, and April Meyer.

This has been another KICD Team of the Year profile from Northwest Iowa Now, I’m Steven Cutler.
