Dickinson County, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) The Iowa Environmental Protection Commission has voted to continue a program with the state’s Ag Department aimed at improving water quality in the Iowa Great Lakes.
According to the DNR’s Ginger Murphy, the water quality is vital.
The plan was first implemented in 2018 and is backed by an EPA grant of up to 129,500 dollars.
Murphy says that since the project began, it has resulted in a reduction of nearly 7,000 tons of sediment and more than 15,700 pounds of phosphorus annually.
Murphy highlighted one of the project’s successes: Lower Lake Gar.
Despite this progress, Murphy says that phosphorus remains the primary pollutant of concern, and continued work is needed to see more improvements.
