Peterson, IA (KICD) — There’s a lot of history in Peterson, which is the site of the first settlers in Clay County. Several museums and historic sites are hosting open houses Sunday afternoon, including the Gust Kirchner log home constructed in 1867, and still owned by his descendent Deb Minnich.

Archeologist Mark Anderson from the Sanford Museum and several students are excavating the site before some much-needed preservation work begins on the structure.

Peterson Heritage’s open house is from 1 until 4 Sunday afternoon at the cabin site North of town; Jim’s History Barn and the French Museum in town; and the frame house, schoolhouse, and machinery museum at Kirchner Park.
