Sibley, IA (NorthwestIowaNow.com)  Water is flowing to Sibley, as the city becomes the 20th and final member to be connected to the Lewis & Clark Regional Water System.  Senator Chuck Grassley and other officials were at the ribbon cutting ceremony in Sibley (yesterday/28th).

Grassley was there when the project was approved by Congress in 1990.

On October 16th, water started flowing from Vermillion to Sibley, joining 20 cities across Northwest Iowa, Southwest Minnesota and Southeast South Dakota.

The project has taken 34 years to get to this point, but still has more work to be done. By 2030, a water treatment plant in Vermillion South Dakota will be completed, and that will increase Sibley’s reserved water capacity from 650,000 gallons a day to one million gallons a day.

Lewis & Clark Regional Water System is the only one of its kind in the country, and other Iowa cities connected include Sheldon, Hull, Sioux Center and Rock Rapids.

Construction oversight is provided by the Bureau of Reclamation.
