Des Moines, IA (NorthwestIowaNow) — Justin Glisan breaks down the month of June 2026, beginning with a look back at the Spencer Co-op data for temperature and precipitation.

“If you look at the average temperature for Spencer, it was 70.1 degrees, or 0.8 of a degree above average. So just right in the ballpark of the statewide average and that northwestern Iowa average. On the precipitation side, Spencer picked up 3.36 inches of rainfall, and that was 1.24 inches below average. Rainfall occurred on 9 days during the month, and the highest rainfall was reported on the 28th, and that was 1.77 inches during that last active week of June.”

A lot of overnight convection brought strong to severe thunderstorms during the nighttime and early morning hours across Iowa this last month. These storms caused significant flooding and produced several reports of damaging winds and large hail.

“So, a lot of overnight convection, that’s where we get a majority of our rainfall during our wettest months. Several high wind and hail reports across northern Iowa, 13 tornadoes in total for the state, which is slightly above average. Uh, so yes, as you aptly put it, with the thunderstorms we get rainfall, but we also have higher chances of severe weather, particularly when we’re in those, uh, Storm Prediction Center outlooks.”

July outlook indicates a pattern shift. The month is expected to start out warm, but cooler-than-normal temperatures could develop during the second half of July. Precipitation is forecast to be at or slightly below normal for the month.
