Spencer, IA (NorthwestIowaNow) — The latest U.S. Drought Monitor was released on June 30, with the map published Thursday, July 2nd. It shows D1 (Moderate Drought) conditions beginning to creep into Cherokee County as well as far eastern Palo Alto County.

Otherwise, more than 80 percent of the area remains in D0 (Abnormally Dry) conditions, while roughly half of Buena Vista County and all of Pocahontas County have no drought.

Of course, we expect significant changes following the rainfall and severe storms that have moved through the region this week. In addition, plenty of heavy rain is expected over the next couple of nights, which could lead to further improvements in drought conditions.
